The One must Prevail expansion allows you to play Altar in solitaire mode with one player playing the God of Chaos.
The 4 opposing Gods are placed on the playing field (a fifth God having been consumed by the God of Chaos).
The God of Chaos has no special abilities, while the other Gods have tokens representing their abilities on their realm.
The Gods also have Followers associated with them:
- God of War has Warriors
- God of Light has Paladins
- Ancient God have affection cards (Abomination, Sorcerer, Deceiver),
- Goddess of Death has Daemonesses,
- Goddess of Love has Seers and Tempters
There are three levels of difficulty for the configuration of the temples of the opposing gods:
- Easy = each opposing god starts with 1 active and 2 inactive Altars
- Intermediate = each opponent god starts with 1 Shrine and 2 inactive Altars
- Hard = each opposing god starts with 1 Shrine, 2 inactive and 1 active Altar
The God of Chaos starts with 5 Berserker cards in hand, which allow him to steal the abilities of an opposing god.
The game consists of three phases:
- draw phase
- action phase
- construction phase.
Draw Phase:
The player draws five Follower cards and distributes one of them, at his convenience, to each of the gods and to himself.
If a card associated with a god is drawn, it must be given to that god (e.g.: a warrior must be given to the god of War).
The cards dealt to the opposite gods are placed next to their kingdom.
Action Phase:
The effects of the cards are performed in turn, starting with the Ancient god or the god of Chaos if there is no Ancient god.
Chaos God can play his Bersekers to take over another god's ability.
Other gods can only use the effects of their associated cards, Worship cards, Fanatics and Priestesses.
The other cards can only be used for Rituals.
Construction Phase:
Depending on the cards the gods have aside of their Realm, they can build as follows:
3 Ritual symbols = Sanctuary
2 single cards = inactive altar
1 single card and 1 Ritual symbol = transformation of an inactive altar into an active altar.
These cards are then discarded.
The game ends when a god fills all the slots in his Realm with the appropriate temples!
